Grateful Dead and friends page for Chuck Campbell
Phil inspired bassist. I am blessed that I have jammed along with Phil and co. (on concert recordings & cd's) for a long, long time.
I hope this is a fun page to visit. It's just me sharing my times with the listening & the jamming experience. Also, I'd like to promote my friends from entertainment central. They keep the legacy alive for great acts (who are classic, but not in the contemporary public attention- but still working their butts off!) Check it out. Bust me if you like, but the Monkees were and are cool! email me
A special thank you to Terrie Neilson, of Yo Mo Smothers & Bolton rules for her inspiration for me to make this page.
In short, here's a personal page to share a unique part of Deadheadland and some cool links.
What a long, strange trip it's been!

The Route 66 Network
The Route 66 Network is for webmasters of 50's, 60's and 70's music websites, including TV and other sites related to the era.
Route 66 is a new-styled webring where instead of having a normal webring, each member site sets aside one page on our websites where we would post news on what's happening at other members' sites.
To help accomplish this, a new Yahoo Group was set up where members can post what they would like to have included on all the Route 66 Network pages, and when each webmaster updates his/her site, the Route 66 pages will be updated correspondingly.
Please note that this group has NOTHING to do with the US highway.

Blast from the Past
Blast from the past project
In the 50's 60's and 70's there were some great music acts that made some of the best music ever. But as time passed and new acts were put together the record companies and main tv stations dismissed the acts as has beens.
Many of these great acts are still working with more or less the same band members and sounding great, but the only place fans get to hear them is at concerts or self-recorded albums with no big-label promotion behind them.
Today, radio and tv stations have programmes that only feature current Top 40 musicians. But what about the bands and solo artists who paved the way?
I have set this group up so that people who agree could work together in our goal to promote the idea of a tv show that features live performaces by acts from the 50's, 60's and 70's.
Working together we can reach our goals and other such projects

July 1 - Summerfest - Marcus Amphitheater - Milwaukee, WI 2003
We were at this show and the one at Float Rite Park in
Sommerset, WI. Here's some pics of the Milwaukee show
(courtesy of dead.net) -Thanks, dead.net, My camera....
It started with Willie in Milwaukee....
EXCELLENT! I couldn't stop singing!
We were treated to Phil, Bobby, Mickey, and Bill with their
friends. Each song was amazing. I really miss Jerry. I think
about him as we are one with the rolling thunder -cryptically
enveloping, cascading waves of life and Mother Nature around
us in this amazing ampitheater, in this city park on the lake.
The Music and Light of The Dead. It may be as close as I can crawl
to Terrapin Station.....................But at least I'm enjoying the ride!

QUESTION and ANSWER DEPARTMENT
Questions: The Dick's Picks series seems to have
overlooked a significant era in Grateful Dead history:
1987-1990. Is there a reason why no Picks have been
made from this time period (except 9/16/90, Dick's
Picks Vol. 9)? And, can we expect to see a Pick from
this era?
Answer: Although it's true that there have been no
Dick's Picks from this excellent era, there have been
many audio and video releases that cover 1987-1990.
The DVDs "Ticket To New Year's," "Downhill From Here"
and "View from the Vault Volumes 1, 3 and 4" represent
this era visually, while the audio release "Dozin' At
The Knick," "Terrapin Limited" and "Nightfall of
Diamonds" are audio releases from that time (as well
as the "View from the Vault" soundtracks). The reasons
that this era has not been selected yet for a Dick's
Picks release is due to the many excellent-quality
video and multi-track master tapes the Grateful Dead
have from 1987-1990, making many shows from this era
releasable in forms that are different than the Dick's
Picks series (ie DVDs and "Vault Release" audio
releases). When a "Pickworthy" show comes up for
possible release, if we hold multi-track audio or
video masters from that show, we release it under one
of these other series. Ultimately, though, the end
result is that many shows from 1987-1990 have been
released, although not as Dick's Picks. There are many
shows, however, for which we do not hold multi-track
audio or video masters from 1987-1990, so rest assured
that some day, likely sooner rather than later, this
time period will be represented in the Dick's Picks
series.

 about this page:
I was inspired to put up a page in honor of the
Grateful Dead, as I have about 15 years experience playing in bands
that played some dead covers. Naturally, dead-heads would come to
our gigs, 'cause bands that do dead covers are very rare in these
parts. So it's been a long and strange "trip". All the while, I
just had an otherwise "regular" family life.
So my idea of the page would be to include all kinds of Grateful
Dead news and updates, as I run across them, but throw in the twist
of putting in stuff like, 'the music played the band' or 'bound to
cover just a little more ground'.......
In short, I hope to provide content and information that you like.
I will do my best and have fun too!

Welcome aboard Chuck! Was hoping you could make it. :)
What brought Chuck over here from Link Together was a
mention of the Route 66 Network concept (Link Together
is a banner/link exchange only), of which several of us
are involved. Looks like it's working some magic, Wayne.:)
Among the group here are folks with oldies sites (from the
US and the UK), Laura sends daily Day IN Music History
notices, we have one member who is an RPGer, so we're
looking at hopefully a great group.

1931 - Ike Turner is born.
1941 - Art Garfunkel is born.
1946 - Gram Parsons guitarist and vocalist for the Byrds and leader of the
Flying Burrito Brothers, is born.
1947 - Peter Noone is born.
1959 - Bryan Adams is born.
1960 - Johnny Horton, who had a Number One smash "Battle of New Orleans,"
is killed in an auto accident in Texas. Ironically, he had just played his last
show, at the Skyline in Austin, Texas-where Hank Williams had played his last
show as well. Horton's widow, Billy Joe, was also Hanks Williams' widow.
Johnny Horton was 33.
1965 - Decca Records releases the Who's "My Generation." The Pete Townshend
song will be the English group's biggest British hit, reaching #2 but it will get no
higher than #74 in the U.S.
1970 - Midway through a Beach Boys show at L.A.'s Whiskey-a-Go-Go,
Brian Wilson, making one of rare stage appearances, loses his balance several
times and has to be helped backstage. His right ear, the better of the two,
sustains "severe damage" because of the volume level on-stage.
1973 - Performing "Quadrophenia" has posed many problems for the Who during
their current tour. On this night in Newcastle, England, it falls apart. Much of the
long work is performed to taped sections and when one of the pieces comes in
fifteen seconds out of step with drummer Keith Moon, Pete Townsend explodes
berating the sound engineer and storming off stage. Townsend returns a half hour
later, but the group abandon "Quadrophenia" for the night.
1977 - Ozzy Osbourne quits Black Sabbath, only to rejoin a few weeks later.
He eventually quits again and pursues a successful solo career.
[Entertainment_Central] Today in Rock History - November 6
1948 - Glenn Frey, guitarist and vocalist for the Eagles, is born.
1965 - Bill Graham, who will become one of rock's most powerful entrepreneurs,

One the night of New York City's famous blackout, Bob Dylan, the Band's
Robbie Robertson and Dylan friend Bob Neuwirth jam with Brian Jones of the
Rolling Stones in his suite at the New York Hiton.
1973 - Singer Gram Parsons' manager Phil Kaufman was fined $300 for stealing
Parsons' body from the Los Angeles International Airport. After he took the body,
Kaufman had it cremated instead of taking it to the funeral. Kaufman claimed it
was Parsons' wish to be cremated.
1980 - Paul Simon plays his first U.K. concert in five years, accompanied by
studio-funk band Stuff, at London's Hammersmith Odeon.

it will make it up to #25.
The Beach Boys' "Dance, Dance, Dance" enters the Hot 100 where it stays
for eleven weeks and peaks at #8. It's the groups seventh and last chart entry
this year and the fourth to make the Top 20.
1968 - The Doors are banned in Phoenix after Jim Morrison tells the audience
to stand up. The local authorities were wary of Morrison's intentions because
he had recently mooned an audience.
1973 - The Rolling Stones open their first U.S. tour in three years in Denver,
Colorado. In those three years, the Stones have been the almost constant
hero-villains of public controversy over their drug busts, censorship battles
and reportedly uncoventional sex lives. The tour is all ready a media event.
MGM Records President Mike Curb drops 18 acts from his roster in a move
to discredit musicians who "expolit and promote hard drugs through music."
Among the acts dropped are such alleged "Drug advocates" as Connie Francis,

The following is from the Entertainment Central community:
Hi Chuck, welcome aboard! Now we have several Webring owners
among us!!!
Laura
--------------------
By jove I think you've got it! :)
Where LinkTogether is set for us to cross link sites (for the rest of the gang here, LT is predominately made up of folks with their own businesses, though there are a few non-profs like me there) our little collective adds the extra bits of updates to each others' pages. With the Route 66 Network that is the specific plan--cross-link and cross-update. My group here is for everyone here to toss up whatever entertainment can be shared.
Which reminds me: the calendar should be open for everyone here to use. Several of us have act sites (me with the SmoBros, Laura with Ron Dante, Wayne and Brian with their multiples covering the UK and Mersey beats). Let's put it to good use--tour dates, member birthdays, acts' birthdays, etc. Also I've set up a folder for my SmoBro pics I've added. Reserve an album for yourselves.
How you liking the place Chuck? :)
Terrie
-----------------------
You're welcome for the welcome Chuck.
When you mention Laura's posts about the This Day In History add a link to her page if you haven't already--her Ron Dante page is great! Don't know if you caught the message but Laura's working on what's probably going to be a mega-page called Oldies Conection. Wayne Of the 60s Zone--who will eventually post soon (he's a busy guy with all of his goings-ons)--has got some goings-ons with a petition to, basically put though it goes way beyond this, keeps still active oldies acts from benig forgotten with all these newbies getting fame and attention (not trying to shirk them though since this is intended to be a mass-generational multi-decade group about entertainment of all kinds).
Nothing against the LT group, because I have spotted my links coming up in search engines from the other members' link pages. It's the same with the Route 66 thing,...but with us giving each other goodies and sharing ach others updates (and with the Grateful Dead and Mersey tidbits of recent, letting my burrowing research skills and knack for timing of info go to work for the group) there is the sense more gets done--and R66 to LT, R66 linkers show up more often in my counter results. True this is more in my "turf" than LT but I thin the LTers are missing what us folks here have a handle on.
Sorry we've made a mess of your page at the moment, but in the end I know your page(s) will come out great.
Terrie
--------
The funny thing is that a lot of the sites in this group are dedicated to preserving the memory of groups that may fade from the public consciousness. The Dead really doesn't need that kind of help. It's as if I had a Beatles site....
I guess my role would be to introduce the Dead to people not exposed to their music, and wouldn't have stumbled across it except for visiting & clicking on a link.
Thanks again!
Chuck

Here's how Terrie got the PBS Winterland dates:
...I'm glad you liked the dates. For TV listings I use
three main TV Guides (though I do have more at my
disposal): TVGuide.com, Yahoo's TV search, and
PBS.org (both their station finder and their A-Z lists
turn up results). What put me in the neighborhood for
looking up the Winterland dates is that for my
Smothers Brothers page I'm looking dates for the PBS
specials called "American Soundtrack: This Land Is
Your Land" and "Jack Paar: Smart Television". With
my one friend looking for stuff for his Dead page it
was simple enough to add on another search topic.
